Grandma Katia’s Garden
The video above in intended as a complement to the post called An Immigrant Tale - For Katherine. It has been put together from small clips of three old home movies. All three sources were made by Halborn descendants: two 8mm films made in 1937 and 1944 by my father, Halborn descendant Roman Freulich, and a video made in 1986, three weeks before Katia's death, by Roman and Katia's grandson and my nephew, Michael Caditz. All three clips focus on Katia Freulich, Roman's wife, and on the gardens she maintained with love and care for most of her adult life.
Katia was the mother of two Halborn descendants, the grandmother of four, and the great grandmother of three. The video is intended to introduce Katia's great grandchildren, and all Halborn descendants, to a person, and a garden, that played a large role in the lives of the people Katia influenced so profoundly, especially her children and grandchildren.
The short video -- less than four minutes in length -- has an added soundtrack. It is a preliminary mix of a song by San Francisco singer-songwriter Mary Kelley, that was produced by Halborn descendant Mark Abramson, one of Katia's grandsons. Mark plays the guitar and Katherine Wethington, Katia's great granddaughter, sings harmony.
